“Playgrounds” is Stefan Temmingh’s latest CD project, his debut on the label Glossa. Together with Cologne-based ensemble Nuovo Aspetto, he performs “grounds” such as Greensleeves, La Follia and Black & Grey, as well as pieces by Michael Nyman and Chick Corea.
At no other period was the exchange between art music and folk traditions more vibrant than in the Baroque era. Short, recurring harmonic and rhythmic patterns – known as “grounds” or “ostinato basses” – enjoyed a golden age and left an enduring imprint on Western music.
These grounds, with their hypnotic repetition, provide an ideal playground for improvisation and variation – whether played solo or in ensemble, slowly or fast, intimately or with great virtuosity.
Recorders, psaltery, harp, lute, guitar, cello, bassoon, harpsichord – in this impressive line-up, there are no limits to creativity and sounds!
